Geelong Information
Geelong was named in 1837 by Governor Richard Burke. The name is derived from the Wathaurong Aboriginal name for the region: Jillong means ‘a place of the sea bird over the white cliff’'.
The city is located on beautiful Corio Bay and besides the Barwon River; 75 kilometres (47 mi) south-west of Melbourne. Geelong is eway to The Great Ocean Road and the Bellarine Peninsula. The population of Greater Geelong is 210,000, it is Victoria’s second city and ranks 14th in the nation. The climate is temperate, with four distinct seasons.
The city is the home to car manufacturer Ford Australia and the Geelong Football Club, nicknamed The Cats.
This waterfront city has a diverse range of attractions including parks and gardens, museums and galleries, fine restaurants and excellent recreational facilities. Geelong's colonial history has resulted in a legacy of historic buildings, some of which are open to the public, courtesy of the National Trust.
